Computing Timeline

Welcome to my timeline of computer history! Here are some of the most signficant moments that have shaped the world of computing.

1642: Blaise Pascal invents the Pascaline, one of the first mechanical calculators capable of addition and subtraction.

1822: Charles Babbage designs the Difference Engine, a device that can compute functions, marking the beginning of the programmable computer.

1837: Babbage proposes the Analytical Engine, which is the first concept of a general-purpose computer.

1890: Herman Hollerith develops the punch card system to calculate the 1890 U.S. census, which led to the founding of IBM in 1911.

1936: Alan Turing proposes the concept of the Turing machine, laying the groundwork for modern computer science.

1941: Konrad Zuse completes the Z3, the world's first fully functional computer.

1944: IBM and Harvard University complete the Mark I, a large-scale computer during World War II.

1946: ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), considered the first general- purpose electronic computer, is completed.

1951: UNIVAC I, the first commercially available computer, is delivered to the U.S. Census Bureau.

1964: IBM introduces System/360, a family of six mutually compatible computers and 40 peripherals that can work together.

1971: Intel releases the 4004 processor, the world's first single-chip microprocessor, marking the start of the microcomputer revolution.

1976: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak found Apple Computer and launch the Apple I, one of the first personal computers.

1981: IBM introduces its first personal computer, the IBM PC. 

1984: Apple launches the Macintosh, introducing the graphical user interface to a wide audience.

1990: Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web while at CERN, forever changing how the world accesses and uses information.

1993: The Mosaic web browser is released, making the internet more accessible to the general public.

1995: Microsoft releases Windows 95, an operating system that features the Start button and taskbar, drastically improving user experience on PCs.

1996: The Java programming language is officially released by Sun Microsystems, designed to be portable across different platforms and heavily influencing web and application development.

1998: Google Inc. is founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, launching a much better search engine that will fundamentally change the way information is accessed and organized online.
